According to Richard Branson, the Founder of Virgin Group, hiring should focus on personality — it’s about hiring the right team of individuals to create the perfect melting pot for your company in order to have a greater chance of success. However, the best person for the job doesn’t always walk directly through a company’s door.

They decided that some companies need a little extra help with their hiring process. Nate Smith and Brian Noguchi are cofounders of a cloud-based service called Lever that assists human resource departments and outsourced hiring companies with their recruitment processes.

The startup began back in September of 2012, when it received its first venture funding from SV Angel and BoxGroup. Now, various investors from companies including Yahoo!, Yelp, LinkedIn and Pinterest have backed these two young men in their endeavor to leverage hiring in a new way.

Smith and Noguchi decided after a spending a great deal of time with spreadsheets and testing out other applicant tracking tools that there needed to be a better solution. It was frustrating for engineers to grow their teams with incompatible softwares. In their downtown San Francisco office, the team works side by side with over 50 of their current users to make sure that they can continuously improve their software.

The Lever web application allows companies to import candidates straight from the web, using various profiles such as LinkedIn. Lists of candidates are organized in a customizable dashboard which tracks them from the application process to the day a new hire begins. This easy-to-use platform also allows hiring teams to share notes and comments on each individual’s profile and resume for the highest collaboration and the best results. Your team members can share their reactions directly to the candidate’s profile. This allows your team to see the type of relationship the candidate has built with your company or the company you are recruiting for.

PipelineBy having an organized way to track a pipeline of active candidates, companies can easily organize their prospects along each individual stage of the hiring process. These users can find all of the necessary information about an individual including their CV, contact information and social media profiles. This section also allows companies to rate and grade each candidate based upon applications and various interviews.

Smith originally worked as a Product Manager at Google after he graduated from Olin College of Engineering in 2007. He is also the creator and owner of Derbyjs.com, an MVC framework that allows you to write real time, collaborative applications. He was listed by Forbes as one of Enterprise Software’s Next Generation of Leaders. Smith’s partner, Noguchi, not only assisted with the creation of Lever Hire, but with Derbyjs.com as well. Noguchi graduated from Stanford and previously worked for McKinsey and Company, a global management consulting firm in New York.
